ANSI Series Agricultural Chains Manufacturer - A Type and CA Type Steel Agricultural Machinery Chains for Harvesting

These are the ASME agricultural chains: the A type and the CA type, built as steel roller chains on 28.575 mm to 42.010 mm pitch and intended for drives that have to survive dust, grit and shock loading rather than run quietly. Thirty dimension rows across three tables cover the A type sizes from A550 to A620 and the whole CA type range, which reaches down to the CAE44151 at 28.575 mm and up to the S62F3 at 41.910 mm. The range is the ANSI counterpart to the S and C type chains used on European machinery.

What the A and CA Ranges Cover

Four A type sizes and twenty-six CA type rows, thirty rows in all.

Pitch from 28.575 mm on the CAE44151 to 42.010 mm on the CA620 and CA620D.

Tensile strength from 31.10 kN / 6992 lbf on the CA2062H to 66.00 kN / 15160 lbf on the CA960.

Average tensile strength from 35.0 kN on the CA2062H to 74.3 kN on the A557 and the CA557.

Weight per metre from 1.45 kg/m on the CA2060H to 6.94 kg/m on the CA960.

Roller diameter from 11.91 mm on the CA2060H to 22.23 mm on the CA2062H.

Width across the inner plates from 12.57 mm on the CA2062H to 25.40 mm on the S62F3.

Pin shafts hardened as part of the process, which the factory rates at more than twice the life of an untreated pin.

The Two Types and the ANSI Feed Chain

A type. Four sizes, A550, A555, A557 and A620, on 41.40 mm and 42.01 mm pitch, with tensile strength from 39.10 kN to 55.61 kN and weight from 1.60 kg/m to 2.45 kg/m.

CA type, D variants. The CA550D, CA555D, CA557D and CA620D in the second table repeat the principal dimensions of the A550, A555, A557 and A620 in the first table and differ only in weight, so a drive can be uprated without cutting a new sprocket.

CA type, heavy and attachment versions. CA2060H and CA2062H are the two heavy rows, and the F, U and V suffixes mark plate and attachment variants such as CA550F4, CA550(U) and CA550V.

ANSI feed chain. The feed chain in the ANSI series uses a special structural design with a hardened pin shaft surface, which is the feature the range is specified for.

A single row is complete in itself. The opening columns fix the general geometry of the chain, the middle group fixes the pin and the plate, and the closing three give the load rating and the mass in kilograms per metre, so no second table has to be consulted to specify a size.

Where ANSI Agricultural Chains Are Used

The chains are dimensioned to ASME standards, and the range is split between the A type steel agricultural machinery chain and the CA type steel agricultural machinery chain. Both are roller chains, so the same sprocket tooth form applies, and the tables give the two on the same column layout, which makes a like for like comparison a matter of reading across.

Farm machinery uses these chains through the whole production cycle rather than at one station: ground preparation and sowing, fertiliser spreading, irrigation equipment, crop protection sprayers and the harvest itself. That spread of duties is why the range carries so many attachment variants on the same pitch, since the chain body can stay the same while the attachment changes with the implement.

The feed chain is the one place in the range where a single design feature does most of the work. The pin shaft surface is hardened as part of the process rather than left as machined, and that hardening is what the factory rates at more than twice the service life of an untreated pin. On a feed chain running in chaff and soil, the pin and bush joint is where wear starts, so hardening the pin is the cheapest way to buy life back.

How to Read the Tensile, Plate and Weight Columns

Tensile strength is given twice. Q is the guaranteed minimum for the row, in kN with the lbf figure following the slash, and Q0 is the average the production run should hold. On the CA960 those two read 66.00 kN and 72.6 kN, and on the CA2060H they read 31.10 kN and 40.5 kN.

Weight per metre is the column that decides freight and bearing load, and it does not track tensile strength. The CA960 carries the highest Q figure and also the heaviest chain at 6.94 kg/m, but the A557 reaches a close 74.3 kN average on only 2.45 kg/m, so the lightest chain that will take the duty is not always the one with the highest tensile figure.

Plate thickness T sits between 2.50 mm and 3.25 mm across the whole range, and the plate depth h2 between 17.30 mm and 26.00 mm. Where a chain has to pass a tight sprocket, h2 is the figure that decides clearance, and where it has to resist side loading it is T.

Fitting and Tension in Field Conditions

Field machinery is rarely aligned as precisely as factory equipment, so the take-up matters more than the initial setting. Fit the chain with the take-up near the middle of its travel and check the sag again after the first day of work, once the pins have bedded in.

Because these chains carry implements, a slack chain loads one side of the sprocket. Check that the shafts are parallel and that the teeth line up across the full width before the implement is run, and check the attachment bolts whenever the chain is lubricated.

Clean and re-oil after work in wet or abrasive conditions, not only once the season has finished. The hardened pin buys life only while it is lubricated, and grit carried into a dry joint will wear it out at the same rate as an untreated one.

Standards, Hardening and Inspection

The range is dimensioned to ASME standards so that the A and CA types share one sprocket tooth form and one column layout. That is deliberate: it lets a machine builder swap between a basic A size and its CA variant without re-cutting the sprocket.

Dimensions follow drawing convention: d1, d2, L and Lc are maximums, b1 and h2 are limits in the other direction, and T is nominal. The pound-force equivalent sits beside every kN figure, so a buyer working in inches and one working in millimetres can read the same line.

Why Buyers Choose Ocean for ANSI Agricultural Chains

Agricultural chain is bought against a machine model and a season, not against a catalogue number, and what matters to a buyer is depth on a single pitch. The three tables here give four A type sizes and twenty-six CA type rows, with the attachment variants already listed rather than quoted separately.

The worn chain itself usually carries enough information to name its own replacement. Take three figures off it - pitch, roller diameter and inner-plate gap - note which attachment is fitted, and the size can be matched from the tables.

FAQ

Q: How do the A type and the CA type differ?
A: The A type is the four basic sizes, A550 to A620. The CA type adds the D variants of those sizes, the two heavy rows CA2060H and CA2062H, and the attachment versions that carry an F, U or V suffix.

Q: What pitch range do these chains cover?
A: 28.575 mm to 42.010 mm. The A type runs 41.40 mm to 42.01 mm, while the CA type reaches down to 30.00 mm on the CA627 and CA627F1 and to 28.575 mm on the CAE44151.

Q: Which chain has the highest tensile strength?
A: The CA960 at 66.00 kN / 15160 lbf, with an average of 72.6 kN. The highest average figure is 74.3 kN, on the A557, CA557D and CA557.

Q: What does the hardened pin shaft do for me?
A: The pin surface is case hardened during manufacture. In chaff and soil a feed chain wears at the pin before anywhere else, so hardening that one part is what buys the extra life.

Q: Do the A type and CA type share dimensions?
A: For the 550, 555, 557 and 620 sizes they do. Each D row in the second table matches its A type counterpart in the first table on every dimension, and the two differ only in weight, so A550 at 1.79 kg/m sits against CA550D at 1.94 kg/m.

Q: Which is the lightest and which the heaviest chain in the range?
A: The CA2060H is the lightest at 1.45 kg/m and the CA960 the heaviest at 6.94 kg/m.

Q: What do the letters after the chain number mean?
A: D marks the variant of the corresponding A size, H marks a heavy row, and F, U and V mark plate and attachment variants, as in CA550F4, CA550(U) and CA550V.

Q: What happens if my chain number is not in the range?
A: Send the number together with the pitch and the type of attachment. A photograph of the worn chain is usually enough for us to name the nearest size in the tables.

Quote the Chain Number, Pitch and Attachment Type

The chain number carries the size and the attachment inside it, so CA550F4 is a 41.400 mm pitch chain with an F4 plate, and CA2062H is the heavy version of the 38.10 mm size. Where the number has worn away, measure the pitch, the roller diameter and the gap between the inner plates and send those with a note of the implement it drives. Add the required number of links and the quote will carry the mass per metre and a price.

A Type Steel Agricultural Chains

The A type table holds four sizes and they divide into two pairs by roller diameter. A550 and A555 share a 16.87 mm roller and differ on the width across the inner plates, 19.81 mm against 12.70 mm, which is what makes the A550 the wider chain of the two. A557 steps up to a 17.78 mm roller and 55.61 kN / 12639 lbf, and A620 keeps the 39.10 kN figure of the two smaller sizes while widening to a 24.51 mm b1 and extending the pin to 41.8 mm and 45.2 mm.
