Inverted Tooth Chains Manufacturer - Flank Contact, Crotch Contact and Double Pitch Silent Chains for Machine Drives | Ocean

A silent chain does not look like a roller chain and it does not behave like one either. The links are flat plates with inverted teeth, and the drive is taken through the tooth flanks rather than through rollers and bushes, which is what makes a high-speed drive quiet and what keeps the wear inside the joint instead of on the sprocket. Three types are covered here: flank contact chains in the SC range from 9.525 mm to 31.750 mm pitch, crotch contact chains in the C4 range, and the double pitch silent chains used where two pitches have to be carried on one chain. Tensile strength runs from 8.0 kN on a seven-plate SC3 to 346.0 kN on the SC10.

Inverted tooth silent chains - flank contact, crotch contact and double pitch - Hangzhou Ocean Industry

The Short Version

Three silent chain types in one place: flank contact, crotch contact and double pitch.

SC range from 9.525 mm to 31.750 mm pitch, in standard and heavy builds.

Tensile strength from 8.0 kN on a seven-plate SC3 to 346.0 kN on the SC10.

Chain width from 10.5 mm to 158.0 mm, with 7 to 79 plates in the assembly.

Inside and outside guided versions, stated row by row in the tables.

Made to ANSI and DIN standards, in round pin and rolling pin construction.

Quiet, accurate running at speed, with a flat contact surface for conveying plate-shaped products.

What Distinguishes the Three Chain Types

Flank contact silent chains. Contact is taken on the tooth flanks rather than at the root, which is what keeps the engagement free of roller impact. Six pitches are covered in the SC range, together with the SC8F1 attachment version.

Crotch contact silent chains. Here the contact is at the root of the tooth rather than on the flank. The C4 range is listed in six widths and in both inside and outside guided versions, from C4-120 with 13 plates to C4-150 with 33 plates.

Double pitch silent chains. CL208F1-55.8N and HV4TT-14X13N carry two pitches on one chain. Both sit at 25.4 mm pitch and 55.8 mm chain width, with 35 and 27 plates in the assembly respectively.

Guide type is part of the specification. Every table carries a guide type column and each row states whether that chain is inside or outside guided. The two will not interchange on the same sprocket, so this is a fit question rather than a preference.

Plate count sets the strength. The tables give the number of plates in the assembly next to the tensile strength, so a 7-plate SC3 at 8.0 kN and a 79-plate SC6 at 240.0 kN appear in the same table and belong to the same pitch family.

Plate, Pin and Guide Construction

Flat plates with inverted teeth, not rollers. The load path runs through the plate flanks and through the joints, which is why a silent chain is described by chain width, plate depth, plate thickness and pin diameter rather than by a roller diameter.

Round pin and rolling pin. Both constructions are in the range. The round pin joint is the simpler of the two; the rolling pin version is used where the joint itself has to roll rather than rub.

Pin diameter scales with the family. 3.95 mm on the SC3, 5.08 mm on the SC4, 5.92 mm on the SC5, 6.90 mm on the SC6, 8.90 mm on the SC8 and 10.84 mm on the SC10. Chains at the same pitch in different widths share the pin diameter.

Plate thickness follows the duty rather than the pitch. 1.5 mm on the SC3 and SC4, 2.0 mm on the SC5, on the SC6 and on the SC8F1 attachment version, and 3.0 mm on the SC8, the SC10 and the whole C4 range.

Width is the second dimension that matters. It runs from 10.5 mm on the narrowest SC3 to 158.0 mm on the heaviest SC6, and 117.0 mm on the SC10, which is the range that lets one pitch family cover both a compact machine tool drive and a heavy industrial one.

Flank Contact Silent Chains

Flank contact silent chains. The drive is transmitted where the tooth flanks meet, which is the arrangement that gives the quiet, accurate high-speed running this type is chosen for. The SC range covers 9.525 mm to 31.750 mm pitch, from SC3 through SC4, SC5, SC6 and SC8 to SC10, plus the SC8F1 attachment version.

SC3 to SC5 - 9.525 mm to 15.875 mm pitch

Where Silent Chains Are Used

Machine tools and grinding equipment. Track grinders, machining centres and levelling machinery are named applications for this range, where the drive has to stay accurate while running fast.

Automotive production. Automobile production lines and automotive manufacturing generally, where noise and backlash both matter on a paced line that runs for long shifts.

Steam and power equipment. Steam turbine drives appear on the application list for this range, where accuracy and life at speed decide the choice.

Agricultural and construction machinery. Both are named applications, including drives that see dust and load rather than clean workshop conditions.

Conveying plate-shaped products. The flat contact surface means panels and similar products can be carried without being scratched, which is why this type also appears on conveying sections rather than only on power drives.

Why Buyers Choose Ocean for Silent Chains

Three chain types in one place. Flank contact, crotch contact and double pitch chains are all on this page, so a machine can be quoted without three separate enquiries.

Design data stated row by row. Chain width, plate depth, plate thickness, pin diameter, guide type and plate count all sit in the same table, so a replacement can be identified rather than guessed at.

A strength range that covers both ends. From 8.0 kN on a seven-plate SC3 to 346.0 kN on the SC10, and all of it inside one range of pitch.

Both guide versions are held. Inside and outside guided chains are listed separately, and the guide type is the dimension that most often decides whether a chain will fit an existing sprocket.

Made to ANSI and DIN standards, with the drawing reviewed before production and a dimension sheet approved before the batch is run.

Quiet, accurate running at speed, which is the property this type is bought for in the first place.

Fitting, Tension and Fault Finding

Alignment comes first. A silent chain is less forgiving of misalignment than a roller chain, because the teeth have to enter the sprocket squarely. Check the sprockets before the chain goes on, and check them again after the first hours of running.

Tension it to the specified sag rather than to feel. Too tight and the pins and plates are loaded continuously; too slack and the teeth ride up the sprocket. Use the figure the machine manual gives, and re-check it after the first week.

Confirm which guide version you have before ordering. The tables state the guide type for every row, and an outside guided chain will not fit a machine that was cut for an inside guided one, whatever the pitch and the width say.

Measure elongation across a fixed number of pitches. A silent chain that has stretched past its limit will still look serviceable, so the measurement is the only reliable test.

Read the flanks and the joints. Wear on a silent chain shows on the tooth flanks and inside the joints. A chain that measures inside its elongation limit but has visible flank wear is on its way out.

Treat a new noise as a symptom. A silent chain that has started to whine is reporting a change in tension, in alignment or in lubrication, and it is worth finding rather than living with.

Standards, Noise and Inspection

Made to ANSI and DIN standards. The range follows ANSI and DIN practice, in both round pin and rolling pin construction, so a chain number from a machine drawing can be matched rather than reinvented.

Noise and backlash are the two acceptance criteria. They are the reason a silent chain is specified at all, so both are worth agreeing at the enquiry stage rather than discovered on the machine.

Tensile figures are given as minimum and average. Both columns appear in the tables, so the difference between the guaranteed figure and the typical figure is not left to interpretation.

What to send for a first order: the chain number if it is legible, the pitch, the chain width, the guide type, the plate count if it is known, and the sprocket details from the machine.

Inspection against an approved sheet. The drawing is reviewed, a dimension sheet is issued, and the approved sheet is the reference the batch is checked against.

FAQ

What is the difference between flank contact and crotch contact silent chain?
Flank contact chains transmit the drive where the tooth flanks meet, which is the arrangement used for quiet high-speed running; the SC range on this page is built that way. Crotch contact chains take the contact at the root of the tooth instead, which is the C4 range.

What does guide type mean and why does it matter?
Some silent chains are guided by plates inside the chain and some by plates on the outside. Both are held here and the tables state which is which for every row. An outside guided chain will not fit a machine that was cut for an inside guided one, so it is worth checking before an order is placed.

How do I identify a silent chain that is already on a machine?
Work from the chain number if it is still readable, then settle three things: pitch, chain width and guide type. Those three pin down the part; the plate count and the tensile figure then confirm the duty it was built for.

Why is a silent chain quieter than a roller chain?
Because the drive is taken through the tooth flanks rather than through a roller seating on a bush, so there is no roller-to-sprocket impact at every tooth engagement. That is also why this type is used where a drive has to run fast and stay accurate.

What pitch and strength range is listed here?
Pitch from 9.525 mm to 31.750 mm, chain width from 10.5 mm to 158.0 mm, plate counts from 7 to 79, and minimum tensile strength from 8.0 kN on a seven-plate SC3 to 346.0 kN on the SC10.

Can these chains carry flat panels without marking them?
Yes. The flat contact surface means plate-shaped products can be carried without being scratched, which is why the range is used on conveying sections as well as on power drives.

Are both round pin and rolling pin versions available?
Yes. Both constructions are part of the range, and the chain number on the machine drawing normally tells you which one is required. If the number has gone, the pin diameter and the plate thickness in the tables separate them.

What should I check if a silent chain has started to run noisily?
Check three points in turn: correct tension with the sag the machine specifies, true sprocket alignment, and adequate lubrication. If all three are correct and the noise persists, measure the elongation across a fixed number of pitches and inspect the tooth flanks, because wear there changes the engagement and produces the noise.

Send the Chain Number, the Width and the Guide Type

A silent chain is identified by its pitch, its chain width and its guide type, and all three are in the tables on this page. Send those figures with the machine details, or send the old chain, and we come back with the model, the plate count and a dimension sheet for you to check.
